OK, so I need to find one of these charger thingys with a European plug. We is a French bus remember....and a Spanish laptop ( purchased in Andorra, To avoid the horrid French AZERTY keyboard. There are many things wrong about the French and the keyboard comes top of the list !) I'm confused now. The plug is a 12v cigar lighter type plug. Are they not the same?

My laptop charger has a 12v cigar lighter plug, not a mains one. That's the whole point.
If you have one of the German DIN sockets, Sal (looks like a cigar lighter but a bit smaller), you need to get a "DIN to cigar lighter" converter - dead cheap.

Shouldn't this 'proper' question have only one 'proper' answer?
Ray.

Course they are the same. will have a look next week up the mountain, they have all sorts of stuff where I bought the laptop. I tend to agree that I wouldnt plug an almost €900 laptop into a potentially dodgy charger...better using the inverter .

Sarah
Just seen this
I could have saved a lot of posts.
You do not need to consider the inverter - they are an inefficient way to take 12v, convert to 230v and back down to 12/19v.
As Barry said the universal charger, set to 19v in your case, is what you need. We got one from Maplins at about half the price that he showed.
You can run this from a normal cigarette lighter socket or, as we do from a DIN socket with the adapter cable Boggers referred to.
We have been using this set-up for years.
That DIN cable is handy for phone charging too, because it works from the DIN socket off the leisure batteries, but then so does the normal cigaette socket for the TV. But it means we can charge two devices at once.
Maybe French MHs do not fit DIN sockets like German ones.
Love and kisses from Geoff and Basia

If thats the case it might be worth just taking the laptop into a reputable shop and make sure you get a decent one that fits and has the correct voltage and wattage rating. I had a hell of an issue getting one for Michelles little Dell. Odd socket on it. Dont listen to Captain Over either. Get a good one (your minted! ). Mines lasted ten years.

I did not comment on quality and anyway Maplins have gone bust. I just pointed out others are available at different prices.
And as for 'Michelle's little Dell' where is this leading?
I am sure Sarah now has enough info to solve her problem.

Yes, make sure you get a good one, Sal... many cheap Chinese ones have the potential to be one dangerous. Your computer manufacturer should offer one, expensive but the Billy-Bollocks!!
