It wont all be 18% surely, that would cripple a lot of trucks or older vehicles. Most alpine passes are an average of 7-10% and are well engineered to rarely go over that, they just go on forever. Ive been on some though including one in Austria with a short section of 26% which the bike could only get up with a bit of a hooligan run up. You find a lot more steeper roads here, especially in parts of Yorkshire and the Lake District but they are short as we only have little hills. I think it might be the Wurzen Pass not Wuttzen unless you have found a new one thats just fecking mental steep.

Despite all the cadence braking, constant low gear, a bit of handbrake to relieve the front discs, the brakes still overheated and I had a problem stopping on the campsite at the bottom.

The bit at the top was definitely steeper . Just rather unexpected ...about 5km I reckon

They often do get steeper towards the top. The Col du la Bonnette just seems to go on forever on the southern side, well I think its the highest paved road in Europe. The difference to most passes is it pretty much goes down to sea level eventually on the southern side so you could drive all afternoon and end up in Nice or summat. It was on there our brakes set on fire (Well were smoking like feck). I pulled in to a village about two thirds of the way down and some bloke came running up saying your vans on fire!

We tried to stop for the night north of Lienz . Snow everywhere ..1500 and -5 . So carried on through the tunnel and now in the valley . It’s a tropical -3 here and just started to snow . We would like to top up with water tomorrow before settling in for 4 days if Biathlon . But finding an unfrozen Tap is tough ! We will manage on what we have .

How do you cope with the wuffers wet feet Sal? That's one thing that would drive me crazy, bobbing down to wipe feet and then drying wet towels. Sounds all good fun so far.

Rather frozen feet than mud ! I use those very quick drying swimming towels. Always got 2 on the go. They dry really quickly. And we have underfloor heating so everything is dried no problem.

Hard driving that. I thought you were on holiday, not an endurance course!! Gives him something to do. The drive from Italy up to Bled ( no motorways !) was far far worse. yesterdays drive brought our average for the 1700 odd km down to under 60kph. We are only pootling now though. Hochfilzen next. Then a little dip into the Vaterland...back into Austria then Czechia. now for the search for unfrozen water. Whats the best way to get snow in yer tank ?

A bucket of it, standing on the engine when ticking over? Slow going, though, but I guess it could tide you over.
