Arrived at cala de mijas hoping to have a good look around .it's a nice place and long walk along sea front.
Parked for 1 night and lots more vans arrived there was possibly eventually 150 vans. They have a big market here. Police came issued letters saying must register and can stay 2 nights only but only 30 vans allowed.
Managed to get no 6 as friend next door is Spanish speaking.
Most were not bothered and thought nothing would happen.
6pm last night police came again and kicked all the ones with no tickets off. Much shouting !
A lot though had been on here for up to 2 months this spoils it for people like us who want to visit for short periods right seeing and we can't get on.
1 French guy was in a 400,000€ clou liner and he wants to park in a car park for free?

I love wilding but this kind of behaviour in Spain puts me right off. It seems to be happening a lot in Spain and Portugal I gather, they will just fuck it up for themselves eventually and everyone else.

I agree but it seems from what I read that is almost always coastal areas, so if one stays away from them, and as one can see from e.g. photos posted by Tam on Fun, there are some very attractive spots. Of course in winter they might be a bit cooler.

Huge car parks (from the dam's construction days) mean lots of good places to stay.

Thats what they do though, no disrespect to Cookie trying to find a bit of winter sunshine but its the same in summer in other parts of Europe like France, the coastal Aires which are often the most grotty are always the busiest. During our albeit brief ventures into Spain Ive always stayed away from the coast. We did stay on one car park on the Costa Brava which was in a coastal town. The Aire itself was pretty naff and jammed and the car park above it which had a sign on it saying "no Motorhomes" was also stacked. We managed to get a corner spot but it wasnt my idea of fun, I think we stayed one night. Lovely bit of coast though and had a nice ride out on the bike along the cliff top roads which turned out to be the last proper warm weather really (late October I think). If Spain had a better network of Aires maybe a few miles from the coast I would be more tempted but its never been a country I have been keen on to be honest.

What has the cost of your camping car got to do with where you want to park ?? is there some kind of minimum value of bus that applies to parking ? Jeez. No wonder I avoid English registered vans !

Cookie also said
"... he wants to park in a car park for free?"
I wonder, could he tell us how he established the MHomer's motive for parking there.

What other explanation can there be for it apart from being a tight arse? Hordes of motorhomers squashing themselves together on a bit of wasteland for months on end turning the place into a shanty town, trying all sorts of methods to get rid of grey water and their shit which by many accounts is not always disposed of responsibly when there are plenty of low cost sites or aires that are kitted up for the Spanish Winter season all over the place. Cookie wanted to stay a couple of nights so I may have done the same and put up with it for a night or two but if you were staying for a long time what other reason can there be for putting up with that other than not wanting to cough up for facilities. My experience of some motorhomers is they are tight arsed feckers to be honest. Ive watched them on Aires etc, many of them bring their own grub, dont go to the local bars or restaurants and just sit in their fecking vans. Its no wonder some places get pissed off with them. Ooooh. Im in Rant mode!!

Ooooh. Im in Rant mode!! Sorry Baz, but the implication that a 400k bus is parking there just because its free is ridiculous. i have never parked somewhere because of the price. I park in the best place possible for what we want to do...not giving a shit about the cost. Yes, there are loads who resent spending a cent and believe having a camping car entitles them to everything being free. There are also loads who think its essential to be poor to have a camping car...and fighting over every freebie is imperative. If you dont need to do this then the reverse snobbery starts. Total crap. If I ever had the misfortune to be on a Spanish costa at any time of the year surrounded by the great unwashed its clear all marbles would be long gone.

Don't forget that there are many, many people who have spent every cent they have on just buying their dream motorhome (even if maybe just an old banger) and what with running costs they really are struggling financially. £25 a night just for a parking space, with water and drainage they don't need at that particular time, is just beyond them.
Which is why French Aires, etc., are so good - you're not being ripped off if you do need to pay a modest amount and many are free. If there were more "motorhome-only parkings" for between £5-£10 a night, then all this scabby encampment-style of motorhome "gatherings" wouldn't happen. And if it did, it would be easy for the authorities to move them off. It's the sudden (10-15 years!) boom in motorhome sales that's caught everyone by surprise.

Dont get me wrong, I hate campsites and hate spending money parking the van but if I Was going to stop somewhere on a Spanish costa for a long period of time I would either find an Aire like the one Alan uses for less than a tenner or do a deal on a quiet site or private aire maybe away a bit from the coast for a couple of hundred Euros a month or summat and make use of the facilities. FFS! If your not moving the van your not using diesel so your saving a few quid there by not moving about all the time. When we spend months on end in France I spend feck all on camping / parking as its Aires are superb and wilding is great in the mountains but I Dont wanna share my wilding spots if possible or maybe a few vans so will find out of the way places. None of this costs anything but then ill go and spent thirty quid on cheese and go down the pub instead. Im in rant mode at the moment if you hadnt noticed. I have gout, im pissed off and the tablets make me a right grouchy Bastud! Grrr! Feck off world! Twats.

I share your pain, young man.
Had a cataract operation a couple of weeks ago that wasn't as successful as I'd hoped – the plus side is I can see through clothing – but it also has its downsides when a lard arse passes by.
Then a heart scan that means I now watch the Funeral Plan adverts with a bit more interest.
Can't drive until the eyes get sorted out and another operation on the other eye in a few weeks time means going out in the MH will be late Spring or early Summer at best.
It's been hammering it down with rain and the dog wants walking soon and I feel like sh*t.
Thank the Lord the wine cellar is full.
Now stop moaning and get on with your life …....
I'm having to get on with mine.

On our year away we only went on half a dozen camp sites and that is so we could do some repair or other usually the bloody fridge, all the rest of the time we used free Aires or wild camped in any of the 18 country's we visited with only one problem, somebody tried to break in the van on an Aire in South of France of all places.. Some of the poorest countries we were made very welcome and everybody was very helpful curious to see where we had been and where we are going next, and they were surprised when we answered we haven a clue, we are just following the front of the van and see where it takes us, no timescale no cost restrictions. Got ourselves in some pickles when we ended up at a border of some country that wasn't in the EU which threw up insurance problems on the van insurance, all the borders had a fat sweaty guy selling insurance for that country, which was a load cheaper than turning round and driving through a country we could to progress to somewhere else down the road..
If you are going for an adventure, well have one so we did.
