Kay the sound quality can be a bit iffy but when the radio and the ipod are close together it's not so bad. Also I would recommend buying one with an on/off switch. The automatic ones are supposed to detect when they are not in use and turn themselves off though I found they didn't and I had to put new batteries in each time I used mine. My older one has a switch and it's much better.
To use it you just find an unused FM frequency on your dash radio and tune the sender to the same frequency and plug it into the headphone outlet on your ipod or whatever. Some senders allow only a limited range of frequencies while others can be tuned to any frequency. The latter type is better, especially in France where the air waves are very cluttered.
Mind you having said all that I would be very surprised if your dash radio didn't have an Aux input you could connect to using a mini jack cable. Is there an Aux option in the same menu that allows you to change from Radio to CD, if so it does have an Aux input socket.
Anyway good luck with it, Alan.
Edit: The one I linked to was the first one I found on Amazon. I have just checked the spec. It has a good range of frequencies and can be powered from the cigarette lighter socket so it won't eat batteries. May or may not have an on/off switch but that won't matter if you aren't using it with batteries. It would do your job very well.

If you two don't recognise that fine lady you are missing out very badly. I will continue to give some clues in the hope that one of you will recognise her. Please, don't anyone else help them out.

The Sony shop suggested I try to get some sort of cable to connect to a BUS socket that is available but beyond that they were no help and I've not had any luck searching t'internet for a suitable cable or technical help I think your option is probably the simplest although I have started taking my BOSE dock when we're on hook up

I see Kay.
The FM thing is useful for the telly as well. When it's raining or very windy and the telly is hard to hear we put it through the radio so we can hear.

we've got one of them Pure Highway DAB units in the motorhome - plugs into the 12V and transmits the DAB signal to the radio and speakers by FM much like that unit shown. works well although sometimes finding a free FM channel can be a pain if you're in a large town or city as there are so many stations broadcasting and it may change if you're travelling so you lose the DAB.
