We are getting a gel battery as its the only thing there is. The charger has a gel setting. The freezer is off now anyway and the freezer battery disconnected. We only used it intermittently anyway....as its -9 degrees as I type, there really is. I need to power it ! We will review the battery sutuation on return to France. We did have the extra battery installed just for the freezer but it seems the Frenchies did not do a very good job. We have never run the battery down before...but then it happened in Spain in september out of the blue...and then again 2 days ago. The second time was the last time and he gave up. The Bus is only 4 years old and we had him from new. I would expect the battery still to be fine tbh.
Being in Germany there are no credit cards ( drives us nuts every time) so the fella has now taken himself to the bank to extract cash.....and then he will i stall our new battery. Very good considering he intended closing for the day at 1pm. Still. I dont think it will be cheap !
Thanks for all your help. Many moons ago I got a degree in chemical physics and I heve never needed to use it until this week. Himself has the equivalent of an O level in sport...and he gave up physics aged 12. So he has been sacked from anything mechanical . His only useful contribution so far has been speaking the lingo and even I can get by. BUT ...goday is my birthday and he did give me a very nice present so I shall keep him :-)

Batteries may last four years, or one year. It depends on how they've been used and maintained.

Good link, Alan. Botone (post #2) says what I was trying to say but failed. Batteries generally have far less capacity than is often thought (or what the label on them claims).

Lidl take credit cards in France too. But battery shops dont. It always causes an arguement with their bloody EC cards. Himself starts ranting on at anyone who will listen.
Battery purchased. Its the next generation from gel and we are assured entirely maintenance free.
Surely nothing else can go wrong.....

Happy birthday Sarah!! Glad you got sorted and it's great to see the Fruits giving good advice
As it does now appear that the mysterious freezer is connected to the main battery then I wouldn't use it. It's clearly dragging it down. In my super low tech kontiki I have a clever mppt solar controller which sounds and Alarm I the battery gets too low or too high but if you don't have such a feature is there anyway you can monitor the voltage? Multi metre even, about a fiver from an electric shop.
All I'm getting at is you need to make sure you have resolved the issue of flattening the battery otherwise the new one will go the same way. Must be the freezer probably
