It was you who asked about these wasn't it Alan? We have the same problem here and frequently find that the water in Spain is very hard too. It's a bugger cleaning the kettle, tap filters, shower heads etc. and it practically a full time job getting glasses clean. I am bothered about furring up our pipes and the hot water boiler. I decided to try a softener and see if it works. Maybe it won't but it's worth a try. Domestic units are known to be effective but they are too bulky for us so I have just ordered this one www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORTABLE-WATER-SOFTENER-RV-Boat-/121365425332?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c41f16cb4 It needs ordinary salt every 5 to 7 days but I can live with that. Who knows? It may work, it may be crap. Will report back when we try it. I already use a water filter on the hose so will just add this before it and give it a go. Ours is slightly different as we connect using the City Water facility on our van which means we are connected directly from the mains to our taps via a hose in much the same way as the water in a house works. I just hang the current filter on the tow bar, will fit this one opposite and link from one to the other

Thanks for that - yes it was my query on Fucts. So far it hasn't been a big issue for us as the van is still quite new and hasn't had huge use in the last year or so but it is something in mind as the build-up of calc we get at home here is awesome - have to clean the inside of the shower every couple of weeks to be able to see through the glass! (all water used in kettles etc is filtered which makes it OK). I am going to flush the boiler (in the mh) with vinegar to see what comes out but the water softener could be a useful add-on to prevent this in future so will be interested to hear what you think.
Again, thanks Alan Alan

You are right Sandra, we are losers spending our time in picturesque, rural France where there is next to no crime, no traffic, where it's peaceful and quiet, and best of all no overcrowding when we could be in Lancashire where the water is so soft. Don't know why I hadn't realised that before now. I will up sticks and head for Lancashire tomorrow, probably. Honestly.
