I have a 3 sim which works well in my phonetab (stupid bloody name for a phone and tablet combination). I've got the ASUS version and used it in France and Spain last year. Not the quickest download speeds but enough to get onto most sites, we even managed to book our flights to India on it although paying through online banking was a real pain as the connection just timed out. Have had no problem with using it in the UK and have even been able to use it to tether.

Yeah it would work as long as it takes the same size sim but 150 Mb is not much at all. Is that per month? A ten minute Youtube vid would take up that much. Are you sure you have that figure correct? 3 do a feel at home package which allows you to use the data abroad for no extra cost, maybe thats what Terry was using. I think Tablets are the Devils work and are only fit for playing ducks and drakes with but thats just my opinion. Most people love em. Sounds cheap enough though. At least at that price your not forking out a fortune for an iPad which IMO are still shit so if its crap and like me you hate it you can see if you can beat my record of 15 bounces across a calm pond.

I have a PAY go phone, to up with a £5 er and I get 150 mgb 25 text. I would only use it for email and keeping tabs on you lot.

Should work for that Joe. With a laptop as soon as you start using a sim tethered to a phone the data usage rockets compared to that of a phone if you browse sites etc. I guess a tablet will be less than a laptop but more than a smartphone but if its just for emails then it might be ok. Also I am not sure how these things update themselves so you may need to turn off any automatic updates (if they do them) when on the sim connection and just update it when on free wifi. You could always increase your data allowance if its not enough. I think 3 were doing some package of about 15gb for £10 or £20 or something like that. 747 might know he is into all that stuff. I tend to just find wifi with antennas and stuff so Im not the expert on sims as I hate paying for internet connectivity.

Joe, as Barry guessed I was on the 3 Feel at Home tariff so data use wasn't a problem. You can buy a 3 sim only card, I had a 5 meg sim for £10 a month that could be used at home or away in Europe.
My day to day sim contract is an all you can eat contract and that works fine at home and in most of Europe but I can't tether whilst abroad. I just slip it into the ASUS when we leave in the van and it works fine.

Yes but for that kind of price it wont be that great but an improvement on the standard wifi your laptop puts out but remember these things are usb powered and tablets do not have a USB port normally. www.motorhomewifi.com is the place I get my stuff from. Their iBoost system is the wifi router system of choice for a lot of motorhomers. It allows you to connect tablets and phones etc by creating a hotspot in the van. I dont have one but I have one of their directional antennas and its very good. You get what you pay for really but even a cheap antenna will be better range than a laptops internal wifi adaptor.

Check out the 3 website for the various deals on offer. The wifi coverage has been 100% good since I bought my 3 mifi.

If so why please? The reason I do it sometimes, but not always, is to get a bigger screen display for some pages - not e-mails. We do get 3Gb/month in our package and have not burned through it yet. Geoff 3gb per month for a mobile connection is a decent amount Geoff. Unless your streaming video all the time and your just using it for browsing I doubt you will exceed it. As soon as you connect a laptop by tethering it to a mobile connection it consumes far more data because most sites alter their layout and resolution if a mobile device is detected. The difference in consumption is huge.

Since I am connecting to the websites through the Smartphone how do the sites distinguish between that smartphone displaying on its own screen and the laptop being tethered to it, i.e. how does the website know about the local tether between the two devices? Maybe I am on a learning curve here Oh Guru - noises of slaver and slob off-stage Geoff
