Then I think you must accept that you're on your own with this one, sadly.
"Mechanical clatter" from the starter motor sounds as though it's maybe not disengaging? Bearing broken up? Bendix spring broken? Pinion stripping? But none of those answer why it's only occasionally firing up.
Once you've exhausted the suggestions here (Jim's earthing, Alan's fuel solenoid, and the condition of the starter motor itself) maybe it's time to let a local muckyneck have a look and give an opinion? You don't have to accept what he says or even get them to do it, but it may locate the problem quicker for you so you can make a better informed decision on diy repair or get the garage to do it?

If it's a modern starter it could be pre engaged on the flywheel teeth so it never releases from the engine. If so amd itz rattling could be flywheel buggered as well . Ouch.hope not.
I agree with others tho sounds like engine not firing up. Confusing tho wether engines going round or not.
Think we need a translator in here lol

Just had a thought... The starter motor IS bolted up tight to the engine, and not come loose, is it??

Just had a thought... The starter motor IS bolted up tight to the engine, and not come loose, is it?? First thing I checked boggers, then all the connections... I will just see how it goes and hopefully make it to millys and get her local guy to check it out :-)) should be at millys next Sunday if all goes well so guy could check it out on Monday unless I feel the need to get it done on the way :-(

It was the hose that goes on to the Exhaust gas regulator :-)

WHAAAT??? Wot happened to the "rattling starter motor"?? Them German fairies must've fixed it in the night, then the clumsy little feckers broke the hose while they did so! Glad it's fixed and you're on yer way, just 5 Euros lighter!

Glad it's fixed and you're on yer way, just 5 Euros lighter! It was the wee pipe rattled and worked its way past the Thingymebob, made it to the whachamacallit. And then rattled the starting motor, so it was right in a way :-) anyway at least I found out what it was and sorted it;-)

Blu, you're a right knob and no mistake. We've all been running around waving our arms about and proper panicing. Our invoices have been sent to SNP headquarters.
