We have been boiling our tits off here. we stopped in the cantal last night and the bus was stinking hot. Then I realised that there was mega heat coming from the radiator behind a side seat. Only that one. No heating on ( entire system off ) . It can only be engine circulation heat , but why ? How ? We had the cab ac on, thats it. same again now we have just arrived home. tis a merc sprinter 519 if it helps. I cannot find anything in the manual.

No idea Sal, ours is a much older van and we only have a fireplace and coal bunker...

Look under the bonnet, you will see where the engine cooling system has been tee'd off to supply the hab radiator. Follow the pipework and you will come across a valve ... close it. These systems usually have a 2 speed fan to circulate the heat around the hab area. Look for the switch.
Your handbook should show all available optional extras (my Burstner manual does). If you come across a 12 volt pump somewhere in the system, that is to preheat the engine from the Alde central heating system in very cold climates. There should also be a switch for the pump.
My van has both of these gizmos (cos I is dead posh) but they are very rarely used. In fact I have never needed to preheat a cold engine in this van or the previous one.

Thanks Jim i assumed it was something like that although we have neither used or noticed it before. There is no fan ( i think ) as its just feeding a convection radiator and only 1 ( which I think is odd...a HE surely would circulate ?) the merc has a preheater anyway so I doubt it needs a link to the Alde. The bus has that many fans and gizmos you never know where to start, the user manual is utterly crap. There were no optional extras, eveything came as standard, most of which isnt mentioned in the manual. Oh. And its all French !!!! merci, will have a dig about in a day or so when temps drop. We had the cab aircon fixed recently and i think the " change " happened then.

Bloodily hell, I'm for it if MrsGB reads this. She moans enough about having to lay over the engine first thing in the morning as it is. However I'm not going to invest in a preheater as I have only just bought her a thicker dressing gown as she was moaning so much about how uncomfortable it was.

If on of those 'switches' controls a thermostat setting, the setting might have been such that nothing was happening at ambient temperature - until you turned on the aircon, which created a demand for heat.
