I think (well that's a rarity anyway) that it started when there were very few MH around and so to see another one was a feeling of "We are not alone"......
but now MH are very common and probably make up about 1 in 100 vehicles (just a guess) and at times and places even more (although not in Central London during rush hour.......)
But why do it? No idea, but we do and the French do it too....... although I have waved white van man and similar in the past......

so - you're a waver then?? as for the French - I can honestly say I've rarely seen a waver in a French registered m/h - or any other European nationals like the Dutch or Germans. it seems to be a curiously British trait nuts to ya!

Same with bikers. All to do with a sense of camaraderie going back to when methinks the roads were quiter. Remember the AA man on his combo who used to raise his gauntletted hand when he saw the badge on your radiator. (Mind you, the combined closing speed was probably only about 40mph!) Some bikers do raise a hand, some don't, I tend to feel a prat when I wave and they don't and I usually question his ancestry. In the MH, I tend to raise a hand on single carriage roads, but not on dual+. So buddha, if you can put your Fruitcakes name in big letters on the front of your van, I'll be sure to 'give you the bird' next time I see you!

I only wave at Police cars.
It unsettles them.

In which case I will continue to ignore you for not waving and both of us will be happy.

I don't wave unless someone waves at me - and assuming I see it in time - then I'll wave back out of simple politesse. But now I've got those artistic decals Barry sells plastered all over my 'van everyone seems to ignore me. Obviously they're just jealous that they don't drive a superior 'fuck off' famous German marque like mine.

OK, fuck the garden, I've off to Uist. That I have to see. I think it was a clapped out Ford Escort panda car with "The Police" written on the bonnet in marker pen from memory. It was the only vehicle we passed all morning.
