Thoughts would be welcome on the ambitions of my niece and her friend . They intend to self build a pvc merc sprinter for a 1 year trip in Europe ( summer and winter ) for under £15k Possible or just insane ?

You should be able to get a sprinter in reasonable condition for under £10 grand leaving £5+ for doing out. Interior fittings depends on what level of comfort they want.

There is a self build forum I think. Wasn't motorhome Kev involved with that? They can have this one for 15k at the end of the summer. No messing about ready to go. I'll even chuck in the scooter!

There you go then! I guess it depends what they want. £15k will get you a ready to go van but an older one. A self build will probably end up being a newer cab, chassis and engine but a shit load of work with no doubt hidden costs. Some people will enjoy that though. I'm not one of them.

I agree . But they think that building their own is part of the adventure . I think they underestimate the work and as they intend being in Scandinavia for winter ...a flimsy job will not cut it

Trouble with all the self builds we saw were they all had owner quirks and individual preferences.

I am currently researching how to convert my son in laws long wheel base sprinter van.
Plenty of space inside (well there would be if he didn't need a workshop in the back) and there are kits that convert the front double passenger seat into a swivel. He doesn't intend to sleep in it in extreme climates so I haven't researched how to super insulate the vehicle other than using a three stage insulate/sound proofing process I watched on You Tube (easy to do but a bit laborious). Loads of bits on Ebay but a host/donor caravan can help them keep costs down. Lots of YouTube tutorials if they are handy and prepared to have a go.

Wouldn't it be better to do Scandinavia in the summer? Apart from it being freezing it will be flaming dark most of the time.

we were on leboncoin last night and I showed them what they can get for their money. i think they are coming round to the idea that a ready made van they can update a bit is probably the way to go. Their original plan was no bog or shower but I reckon that has been firmly kicked into touch ie its fine for a few nights but for a whole fecking year you have to be joking. They have zero skills for actually executing a self build so would rely on youtube and paying for expert advice.... I cannot say they havnt thought about it a lot and made some good plans, but there is also much youth and enthusiasm involved. as we would be their emergency help then I dont want them setting off in an inappropriate vehicle. They want a LHD, so I feel its easier to source here...they would certainly a lot more choice. I assume I am right with that ?

LeBonCoin has millions of adds literally but has evolved recently into a far more complicated platform than necessary. It used to be so easy to search and put adds on but now the home page is far too 'busy' and old easy options take some finding.

Just a thought Sal but if they are British citizens with no EU passport they will face the same three month limit the rest of us here will.
I wouldn't be fussed about LHD. it's no big issue in a MH IMO.

Yes . Have pointed that out . There are ways around it though . You can get temporary French résidence for 1 year if you are visiting relatives is one example . Then you are allowed full schengen rights etc

I did hear an extended visa was possible for France but it was a right arse on to get. If you find a loop hole let us know.
