Buy a vehicle in the country they will want to sell it in - saves a LOT of hassle at sale time. It also would decide Left- or Right-hand drive.
A coach built is better than a campervan from the insulation point of view. Camper vans can be extremely cold in mid-winter, because of the amount of metalwork inside (even when covered in the carpet-stuff).
Recommend the fitting of a diesel-fired heater (Truma, Webasto, Eberspacher) - it's then not so ESSENTIAL to find lpg, in the middle of a Swedish forest in January, or summat!!
A 'self-build' is a LOT of work, but mainly it's experience driven. As they have no experience, they will be making all sorts of mistakes. As Ray says, lots of 'owner quirks'!!
Terry's correct, but this is for people experienced in design and wont be making the mistakes that 'newbies' will.
Buy at the end of the season/mid winter for a rock-bottom price.
Good luck to them - nice to see them "having a go".

Yes . Have pointed that out . There are ways around it though . You can get temporary French résidence for 1 year if you are visiting relatives is one example . Then you are allowed full schengen rights etc Hello Aunt Sally, how are you ad my cousins keeping? Your loving nephew Joe

I did hear an extended visa was possible for France but it was a right arse on to get. If you find a loop hole let us know. it certainly exists. my saying it comes with full schengen rights is bollox though. you should stay in France but as no one checks borders or has a record of exactly where you have been and for how long it really doesnt matter. Have just deposited nephew at airport as he needs to get back before the curfew. quite how the UK thinks that was a sensible move beggars belief. the ports are mobbed which is not clever. and can anyone tell me what is the rule if you have driven to eg Germany but obviously have to return via France ? French media say there are 500000 Brits here....who are now all clamouring to get home. Chaos.

We could do three months in the other countries then just spend the rest of the time in France. That's pretty much what we do anyway. Most of our time is spent in France. Keep us posted on that one. I wasn't aware of the stampede at the ports. Not been watching the news. Sounds bonkers.

Yep, we must have a dozen friends bleating about these latest restrictions. Several who pop back and forth for family and properties plus all the visitors. Quelle surprise.
Ray.
