Why the smaller UK and European manufacturers don't all utilise 'slide-outs' more often, really surprises me. I've seen them on a couple of 'vans, but that's all.
Huge American RVs have them, even though they don't often need them, while small UK/European 'vans that really NEED them don't have them.

As they say... "On European motorhomes and caravans, the key is optimizing the volume of space available in more compact vehicles rather than the idea of expanding space excessively. This is why LCI has developed the Smart Room concept, designed for use even on smaller vehicles such as campervans, to obtain a living space in a six-metre long vehicle that’s comparable to well- equipped larger motorhomes."

I dunno. I think a 7.5 six birth MH like we have for Europe is more than enough space and about the right max size for touring. Why bother buying a clever six metre van with slide outs when you may as well just buy one without thats 7.5 metres? Less to go wrong. I bet they will be prone areas for water ingress down the line as well.

I think VW dabbled with the 'Outback' but that did look like a DIY project.

Yes, there were a couple I saw, Ray, but that's all.
It's just that you could potentially have the living space of a 7.5 metre van, but in a 5.5 metre van, and with no extra width penalty either. I mean, why drive around a massive motorhome if you didn't really HAVE to? You only need to because you want or need that living space. Now, get that same living space but in a smaller vehicle, with easier parking, manoeuvering, driving on our little country lanes, etc. It's a no brainer.

And the weight penalty for a <3500kg model? None. Just post the slide out to your destination. Simple.

I read yesterday that Hyundi are bringing out a new small camper with a rear slide out.
