I posted this on FUCTS a while ago and not much responses.
Perhaps its time we took over the handling of serious threads. It will be fun trying to decide if the answers are real or not.
Anyway
Broke yet another of the Whale Elegance taps in the bathroom the other day.
They are the plastic kind that slot into a spline. I think half the problem is they are a little stiff so over time they deteriorate and weaken then snap. Blooming things are twenty quid for a pair.
I am wondering if I can loosen the action a bit. Is it worth getting into the workings with some WD40 to see if it loosens it up a bit or will WD40 rot and weaken the structure. Luckily we always have a spare but they are a pain in the neck.

Try silicone, they'll have rubber washers in them and they won't like WD40.
I would dismantle a set, look for whatever it is that makes them tight and see if that can be eased. I'd then lubricate the washers and the mechanism with silicone and see if that frees them off a bit.

Barry I read the replies you got on Fucts, and on here. I think they were helpful, especially those that said keep away from WD40 - it is not even very good for freeing up metal to metal compared with a good penetrating oil, which is much thinner viscocity. Also WD40 dries out and gunges - never use it on locks, graphite grease is the one for them. What nobody said on either forums is comment on Whale products. I am not a fan, having had a few on my boat. I recently had to try to source a replacement for my Reichle(? spelling) water pump in the MH, but in Kent could only find Whale so fitted it. Sod's law, when I got back to Poland the MH accessory shop down the road has any number of the pump I needed. Whale is now in spares locker. Back to Barry's problem, if I were keeping Hank I would change the taps, but if not...... As for the aside about whether FC would be a good place for exchange of tech info, it may be better discussed in private . Althought I think the current FC members would help within their knowledge and keep the converstion within bounds in that sub-forum. Geoff

Thanks Geoff. I havent seen the replies on FUCTS yet, just got back in. Never use WD on locks huh? I just squirted some on the hab door lock as it was sticking. Oops.
Any recommendations for a suitable silicon spray?

It damages rubber Barry and can gather crud in locks.

I'm another one who thinks Whale accessories are a pile of shite.
Our Reich water pump packed up and I could only get a Whale submersible. What a performance to get it rigged up and working properly (and I'm a friggin' engineer who worked on pumps all his working life).

Yeah they are shit. I replaced the standard Whale pump with a Surflo system which is brilliant.

Ha. Pumps, water, leaks = Problems.
I noticed a damp patch on a carpet in the van a few days ago. I'm still trying to find out what's causing it. It's definitely not a spill. It's a tiny fresh water leak but it's appeared more than a metre away from any fresh water pipes or the pump. I did find a tiny drip (tea spoonful a day type of thing) at the pump and I've fixed that. I can only surmise that the water from the pump drip has followed the lowest path till it met an obstruction where it pooled and waited till there was enough to move around it. Eventually it showed through the carpet and I'm still seeing and wiping up the water from that drip. Bastard.
If you know what it is you can fix it. If you don't know what it is you can fix lots of things which didn't need fixing. Still it keeps me off the streets, Alan.
