Sorry about this folks, but as I am no longer a member of Facts, thought I would risk a sensible question on here. Me and Mrs Caulkhead are off to France next week and taking our bikes for the first time. Apart from not obscuring the no plate or lights do we need to put one of those red and white stripy thingamajigs on the back? Abusive answers are welcome as long as you give me an answer too......... Not for France but we usually do anyway (if we can find it) I thought the stripey thing was obligatory throughout Europe?? saying that, not many people actually bother from what I've seen - certainly Brits seem to be the worst offenders here. we've had a garage in the last 2 m/h's so avoiding rear mounting of bikes - it keeps them more secure and clean that way as well, and as we have very expensive bikes for racing triathlon I'd rather have them tucked away from view.

No your wrong again you Fat Git. Only Italy and Spain do you have to display the stupid chevron thing. I mean a foot square bit of red and white plastic is really going to stop Johnny Foreigner from rear ending you. If he cant see a 10ft high by 7ft wide big white brick with lights all over the fecking thing then a little bit of plastic isn't going to help you. I had one for Italy for our scooter rack until I learned that you don't actually need one if there is an additional trailer board on the rack which on ours there is. Its in bits now anyway. So to answer you question Caulkhead. Nope you don't need one for France! No doubt however by Summer there will be some other new daft law like you must carry a spare wheel for your bicycle or sumfink like that.

I don't think you need one if you have the breathalyzer tubes with you or is it the other way around?
