As you mention the bottles the system replaced cost " £21.99 X 2 for the Calor bottles", am I correct in assuming that these were 6Kg Propane and that the new refillable bottles are the same capacity? If so, then you paid £1.20 a litre for your gas which, whilst cheaper than the cost of Calor bottles at £3.67/litre, is not much cheaper than Intermarche's 10Kg Butane at £1.60/litre, which is what I use when in France. And with nearly 2,000 outlets, one is never far away from fresh supplies. Oh, and the part to connect a UK POL Propane fitting to a continental bottle fitting can be purchased for only £3.96+VAT - see my post HERE, which makes you about £450 out of pocket! Sorry for the bad news.

Then again if going beyond France it's not bad news as most countries have different bottle fittings, whereas a tank can be filled anywhere if you have the right adaptor, Alan.
