I asked this over in FUCTS as there's probably someone with knowledge over there but thought I'd ask you bunch of dimwits as well..... any experience out there of motorhoming in South America?? (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil mainly) I've read a late 2013 blog on an organised trip to Argentina - www.themotorhomediaries.co.uk/argentina.html - but wanted to see if there are any other experiences people can chip in with. we've done a few trips to the continent (mountain bikes, climbing) but we're thinking of a longer trip (3 months or so) and would like to include a motorhome at some time (maybe all the time??) m/h hire looks relatively expensive (much like Europe I guess) and wonder if it might be worth buying and then re-selling on departure but don't know how practical/impractical this may be as Brits. any advice anyone can offer?? ta

I did meet a couple off FUCTS in Germany Pat and Neil PAT4NEIL in 2012 who were going to do exactly that in a converted big fuck off military truck thing that they were converting into a motorhome. They were going to go from the top of Alaska all the way down to the tip of South America. Dunno if they made it as I never heard from them again soon after that but they still show as members on FACTS so you could try a PM. You should definitely have a slogan on the van though. Something like Keep the Falklands British written over a Union Flag should serve you well in Argentina where apparently they have a great sense of humour and will really appreciate such jolliness. Camping Car infos doesnt show many aires though for South America.

there are some blogs around from people who've done a lot of expedition style motorhome in trips around Sarf America, mostly in adapted military trucks or specialist units like those produce by Unicat and the like, which are only for the very rich (starts around €350k and goes up over €1m ffs!). be nice if we had that amount of dosh but we don't! found someone selling a VW Camper in February 2015 - pick up in Brazil once they have finished their trip. that might be an idea. just picking up any hints and tips as we do the research. I might put a Welsh flag on the side for when we get down to Patagonia.....

Blimey fats! Even I wouldn't be daft enough to take on South America in a vw camper! Having done quite a few trips in one to the likes of Shetland and the outer Hebrides where the blooming thing would usually blow up at some point as well as being only marginally better equipped than a festival tent it wouldn't be my vehicle of choice for such an adventure. Maybe we could organise it as a sponsored Fruitcakes expedition! See if we can get all the forums to chip in and we will all go. We need a big fuck off military vehicle though preferably with live weapons on it! JP is bored and looking for adventure and is also a trained killer. He could be handy.

I'm up for that, as long as were back for Friday for the Nursery run and big shop / bed changing day. Oh I will also need a gun if you can sort me something like a Glock 42

James You are only on the nursery run now. Wait till you are standing at the school gates with those competitive Mums. Also you can start sorting out the drug pushers just down the road from the school, follow up the chain till you get to Mr.Big - maybe then you need the Glock. - You said you wanted something more adventurous. S.America might be easier.[ Athough, come to think of it one of my best friends was the real life 'intermediary' for a hostage spring, of which they made a film(can't remember film name) H e did several and always said the 'handover' was the dangerous bit - he should know he was 'a long-haired weirdo' in N,I for two years.] But you are talking the southern countries of S.America not Colombia. I might be up for it if we were a convey of say three vehicles one of which looked like an armoured personnel carrier. with 'Polcie', or something in Polish which is innocent but at first glance looks like Police. Geoff I went on a cycling holiday in Colombia at the end of 2012 which was the 1st organised holiday cycle tour in the country - and what a great trip. Colombians love cycling (they close many city roads on Sundays to traffic so cyclists can ride them without fear of being knocked down) and the people were very very friendly. we were escorted by motorbike police in some of the large cities but that was to ensure we didn't have any traffic issues rather than any kidnapping worries. we also had a free day in Medellin, aka the Cocaine Capital as it's where most of the big drug barons were based, and what a fab place it is - wandered around the city centre and didn't feel threatened at all. Colombia is dragging itself out of it's drug woes of the past - Peru is the cocaine capital now - and becoming a great place to visit.

Count me in! Me, fats, JP and his clock and the rest of the Fruitcakes running around Columbia and South America. What could possibly go wrong? Do we need to bring our supervisors?

I have been unable to get online for a few days. When we got back today I went on to Facts first and saw the thread 'motorhoming in South America'. I thought to myself " these idiots are getting worse".
It's a good job I did not rush to my keyboard to tell you all about it.
It could have been very embarrassing.
So sorry your Holy Fatness.

Yeah OK but I will drop out in Brazil.
I worked there a few times and it is magnificent. The women are extraordinary, the weather is great and the beer is good (and ice cold). Forget Rio, it is far too dangerous, Sao Paulo is the dogs wotsits (although slightly dangerous in parts).
