Yes Jan. We spent months at a French course here years ago and all we learnt were how many other Ex-Pats there were. We did make friends but little progress in the language. Our greatest progress was joining a mainly French group of walkers and endeavouring to make conversation as we went along the lanes. Gathering a large vocabulary was easy, the hard bit is stringing it all together in an intelligent sentence.

We would both like to learn a little Czech, but its not there Polish is similar and we are often in Poland, it being just across the river. It says join the Babbel is free, but what will I be bombarded with if I register I wonder?

I have used it for a while. I have an annual subsription for all languages . It cost € 46 , I think. Its the best language app out there (imo). It has a very advanced level if you ever get that far. The only criticism is " looking things up " is difficult. You can find stuff without issues but you must go through a unit in order , so if the bit you want is near the end , well.....you have to answer all the questions to get there. Typing gobbledegook is the quickest way but that screws up your stats. So. If you are serious , good old fashioned books are still very helpful 🙂
