It would have been a bank transfer Barry, not a card and I can only look back for one year on line, all the statements are at home, where everything else of importance was. I am being guided by another knowledgable person Geoff who has connections, although your suggestions are very helpful and I am passing them on. My helper here / Heike / is very busy with a few of their problems at the moment, one being with the supplier of their caravan, I don´t want to overload her brain . The garage has kept us waiting long enough so I don´t think there is any rush when mistakes on my part might be made.

You might need to contact the bank to find it but the garage must have posted that invoice electronically into their system so they must have a record themselves also. They would have to record what it was for as well.

Almost giving up I decided to try ringing fiat again I have just spoken to fiat customer care on their freephone number, I told Amy my trouble she asked for the VIN number the name of the garage and where it is, she´s given me a case number and says not to worry they will look into it.
I now have an email from Fiat UK with a new case number and again asking for the VIN number and telephone contact details.
In my reply to the UK I have included the email I sent to customer care Germany that I have not received a reply to.
Watch this space.

Ouch!! Did they say whether the camchain/belt and camshaft were OK, as that looks like damage from a failure in that region putting the valve timing out of sync causing the valves to smash into the piston crown.
Or one valve stem failed, smashing into the adjoining valve.
How many miles has the vehicle done? Camchain or belt usually needs changing at 50 to 60,000 miles.
Good luck with the repairs.

At last! You now have something to go on. As Roger says, maybe camchain, but I suspect just a failure of a valve stem, which should NEVER happen under these circumstances. As ever, good luck.

My first car did that, Mk2 Cortina, similar damage when a valve broke loose, in those days engines where a lot similar so sleeved the bore and skimmed the head.

More cylinders would have been damaged if it was the cambelt I think.
It could have been a lot worse though Milly. A new cylinder head, valves and piston could sort it out (assuming the cylinder bore is not damaged.

My thoughts too, Jim. The only problem may be 'bits' of metal circulating and causing further damage before the engine was finally stopped. Good luck, Mildew .

After almost 3 months without it I have decided to do as I first said and bite the bullet. This morning Heike rang the fiat garage and spoke to the son of the owner. The engine parts are being renewed to guard against any hidden splinters rearing their ugly heads. The engine will then have a 2 year Guarantee. We have also established the son can speak some English and there is a lady in the office who speaks English, I have therefore decided I will go to introduce myself next week and the young man was very pleased to hear that so we can now sit face to face. Therefore after next week it´s all systems go and hopefully all will be finished by Christmas. This will then be one worry off my mind. The second worry about the house is also being acted upon and hopefully it won't be too long before I hear something which, fingers crossed will be in my favour. As I am being told by those involved not to lose sleep about what I will do with the house once this is all sorted, so I try not to worry.
