Thinking of getting a 3 data simm and registering here before we leave to avail of their data abroad at no extra cost. Any of you guys used it or have other recommendations ?
Heading to France and Spain approx 5 months. (Know 3 have a 90 day rule but would either top up or go for local Simm)
I do have BT broadband at home but have never been able to link into the Fon partners in France previously, despite being logged in to sharing.

Do you have a mobile phone contract with a data allowance? We are with Network 3 and will have our UK allowance in France and Spain (with some restrictions), I'm pretty sure that a lot of the other networks have the same. We can tether our 3 network (restriction to 1 mb per month) and have unlimited internet use if it is done on the phone or in a phone/tablet combination. Last year in Spain we bought a data Sim for HITS which had a website you could check your usage and balance on which is extremely helpful. We paid 25 euros for 3 gig which lasted us about a month. This had to be bought in Country and was a lot cheaper than the Vodafone one we had bought when we entered Spain (20 euros for 1 gig). Remember to take your passport with you when you are buying a sim.

No mobile contract, hence the proposed purchase of a 3 3gig data simm to use in the Huawei, noted the local simm option, wasn't aware of passport requirement, many thanks.

It worked fine in our mifi (better than the bloody internet at home ) and the guy in the shop was brilliant explaining what our options were for the area we were in as coverage can vary.

Yes had a really funny encounter with a site off the A75, when I went to reception to pay the guy seemed really interested in my wife, or so I thought, until I eventually realised it was WeeFee. Remember it well as the wifi key was 24 characters long !

There was a thread on FUCTS about the 3 deal. I cant remember but I think there was something else you had to order or add on with a PAYG sim before you went away. Will see if I can find it later but I looked at it and it didnt seem that straight forward. I thought they didnt allow tethering at all though or use in dongles or mifi devices but my info could be wrong. It would be good to get this ironed out actually as if we go away ourselves I might get one.
Knackers is right about FON Or SFR FON as it is in France. It should be dead easy to login now. They are everywhere in FRance.

They are everywhere in FRance.Forgot to mention, for anyone who uses a Fonera Box, like me, that there's a free FON app for Android - see HERE BUT, BT Customers should read the final line and get the appropriate app. Description Log in to Fon Wi-Fi hotspots all over the world automatically. • Free Wi-Fi access for members of Fon and its partners • Automatically connect to the Fon network whenever a Fon Wi-Fi hotspot is detected • Test the speed of the network you are connected to. • Save hotspots areas for offline navigation • Check your usage statistics • Choose to be alerted so you know when you are logged in INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Install the app 2. Enter your username and password 3. Save your settings 4. Enjoy Wi-Fi with Fon! *** If you are a BT Broadband customer, please download the official BT Wi-fi app to get the best user experience ***

Thanks to all for the advice to date.

Well let us know how you get on as it would be good to clarify just whats required for a 3 PAYG dongle to be used abroad and what the true cost is.
I have an old Vodafone dongle on the back seat of the car. Wonder if it would work. Probably needs unlocking which I am sure I Could suss out.
As Fats says its not always possible to get a SFR signal but I manage more times than not with a good antenna. Would be good to have a back up really. I might go to Germany though where the is not much FON and its not one of the 3 feel at home countries. This is a pain in the arse for me really. Its one reason I spend so much time in France as its easy to get online (for free)

Don't believe a word a shop twat tells you. Use it in the UK first to be sure. Most shop twats know feck all. By and large that's true, but even the odd one who does know something about their product will say absolutely anything to effect a sale, and most of what they say is complete rubbish. Even I, who know little about computers and computing, have caught shop twats out who were spouting rubbish about PCs or OSes in order to make a sale.
