If some one like me knows that replacing 20000 full time troops with 30000 reservists cannot work, how come the intelligent ones from public school who run this country don't know it won't work.

the intelligent ones from public school There is where your theory falls down - using "intelligent" and "public school" in the same sentence. You be attempting to add "military" to that soon - impossible!

Intelligence is there, common sense isn't.

What do we need an army for? Other than engaging in adventures we would do far better to stay out of?

What do we need an army for? Other than engaging in adventures we would do far better to stay out of? We may need to protect ourselves from the Scots if they get Independence. We may need to Nuke Spain if if does not leave Giib alone. There's just two sound reasons why we need an army.

May I query your analysis of current military threats to the security of the UK Pusser? I am afraid I don't see why the Scots would seek independence only to then decide to invade us. Wouldn't it take some time for them to recruit and equip an army? I know that the UK has a long and honourable tradition of not paying attention as old enemies prepare for war. Preferring to be the underdog they wait till they, their territories or allies are attacked before even thinking about how they might defend themselves or strike back. Given that, it's quite remarkable that we are speaking English these days and have managed to be on the winning side in several wars.
How many people does it take to press the button to nuke Spain, or anywhere else? Surely the doctrine of MAD applies here. It would be MAD to nuke Spain?
I know this is your area of expertise so look forward to hearing the inside gen. Alan.

I know this is your area of expertise so look forward to hearing the inside gen. Alan. Good points and well articulated. But a posh answer does not in itself win the argument. I suppose I ought to confess that in my view we should reduce the army and all services further for reasons others mentioned in this Topic. But when you say it would take time to recruit pongos in Scotland I would disagree. Over Half our army are Scots, and they could easily join forces with the Welsh, Irish and Nepalise due to tiny disagreements we have had with them in the past. I think we have one or two soldiers from near Liverpool who would also step across the wall. It would leave us very vunarable. It would only take one football match which in the unlikely event England one would be enough for the invasions to start. And half of all them live here already so from the point of infiltration they are streets ahead. All we have is a couple of MHF members pottering around the Glens which hardly constitutes fifth columnists. More people than you would think to launch a nuke attack. Further more, on a personal level I don't like Spanish wine or paella. And then after the attack we need troops to go in there before the French get it I just don't think you have looked as far as I have into the future Ernie but I am prepared to re think your argument and come back to you.

I have thought about it and you are dead right.

Well at least there is still one person on each side of the discussion because you have persuaded me that you were right.
Unfortunately you don't believe in the fifth column any more and now I do, so it's up to me to deal with them. My turn to have a think. I think.
