My Peugeot Boxer is good at climbing mountains but its fecking shit at coming down em. Why? Brakes are shit. They usually set on fire. Well thats a bit of an exaggeration but they have in the past been a bit smokey and faded once on the Simplon pass. Even if you come down completely on the gears, second or even first on a huge pass like the Col de La Bonnette Ive still had issues. The other thing the fecking thing does is it seems to backup a shit load of exhaust fumes on long downhill drags so you start to smell it in the van and at the bottom when you eventually hoof it everyone behind you is covered in smoke for miles. My Turbo is still working though.

Probably a feeble 1900cc one! The one good thing about Fiats is their engines - the rest of the build quality might be dubious but their engines have always been excellent performers in my experience. They're good enough for Ferrari to use(modify)!!

oh and we flew past a stonking great concordia on a fiat base....and we were in limp mode !!!! What is limp mode? When there is an engine problem, limp mode allows you to drive but with limited power. Automatic gearbox doesnt work either.

oh and we flew past a stonking great concordia on a fiat base....and we were in limp mode !!!! What is limp mode? It's what I've been doing for the last 20 years... But new hip and "limp no more"!! (It's where the engine management system detects a fault somewhere and restricts performance so you don't cause more damage - limiting the engine to low maximum revs, etc.)

Poor old Hans has been on limp mode for 10 years Does the Ducato have a limp mode as well then? Most new engines have as it stops you damaging the engine by putting too much strain on it.

My Turbo is still working though. My Hy-men was like that, bloody useless coming down a big hill or mountain. The earlier gearboxes were also badly geared and you were either revving the tits off the engine or have no retardation whatsoever. I would often have to pull over and cool the discs once the risk of warping or shattering them dissipated, I even invested in a small long spouted watering can (the type for indoor gardening or people with limp wrists) so I could get to the discs and cool them with water. The Laika seems to enjoy going down mountains and despite our best efforts of overloading it doesn't do too badly going up them although Hardly the scooter makes it more noticeable.
